The megacity Rises to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" range.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Various sections of the city showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit set by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that covers the city as colder weather begins.
However in recent months, the newly elected local administration approached the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judges complied with the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous levels recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.
International Implications
The widespread use of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the festivities.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of pollution in the capital have persisted as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to spike to 70% higher the worst records ever measured in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
The problem in the city is caused by a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Health and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is estimated to be causing ten thousand untimely fatalities each year in the city.
