RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
