Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
